Spectroscopy of a Femto-Neutron Star with the 3-Spectrometer Setup at MAMI

The Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Germany) has an opening for a

PhD Position in Experimental Nuclear Physics

in the A1 group at the Mainz Microton, to be filled immediately. The position is funded by the DFG and is limited to 3 years.

In this project we explore a new method to study the excitation spectrum of the still elusive neutron-rich hydrogen nucleus 6H. Indeed, present data of 6H are confusing. Questions which need to be answered by the planned experiment are:

  • Is its ground state narrow or broad?
  • What is the mass of this ground state resonance?
  • Are there excited states?
  • And even – considering the situation of the present data – does it really exist?
